What should I say in my first message?
As little as you like. "I would like to speak to someone" is enough. You do not need to share medical details in writing; a clinician will ask what they need to know during a consultation.
How does a consultation work?
A consultation is a private conversation with a healthcare professional, in person or by phone or video. They ask about your situation and your health, explain the options open to you, and answer your questions. It does not commit you to anything.
Is abortion legal in South Africa?
Yes. Termination of pregnancy is legal under the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act 92 of 1996, which sets out the conditions that apply at different stages of pregnancy.
Is my information confidential?
Yes. South African law provides that the identity of a woman who has requested or obtained a termination of pregnancy must remain confidential unless she chooses to disclose it. Health information also has special protection under the Protection of Personal Information Act.
Does anyone else need to give permission?
No. Only the informed consent of the pregnant woman is required. If you are under 18, a clinician must advise you to talk to a parent, guardian, family member or friend, but care may not be refused because you choose not to.
How much does treatment cost?
Fees depend on the assessment and on the care you need, so we do not publish a single price. Ask us and we will tell you the full cost before you agree to anything.
